The latest edition of MCERL's March 25, 2023 ranking list is one of the most interesting in its history.
Many more engines have been added to our list, e.g. FabChess, Seawall, Xiphos, Laser, as well as established ones such as Wasp and Demolito.
I am very happy that the developers are not idle and also in this release we will find numerous updated engines, such as Weiss, Pawn or Arasan in the development version, which is more than 100 Elo stronger than its predecessor!
Due to the update of Wine software, which allows the use of engines designed for Windows on the Mac, I decided to include such strong players as SlowChess Blitz 2.9, Caissa 1.7, Fritz 17 and several others.
A pleasant surprise for fans of the Komodo engine came from its developers. Komodo 14.1 has been made available for free, which is quite a treat, since this engine offers extensive use (e.g., searching using the MCTS algorithm) and even today - not bad power.
And at the very end Stockfish, an engine that is "flying higher and higher" being already stronger by 92 Elo than the second on the list Dragon 3.2 by Komodo Chess. In terms of pure strength, Stockfish is likely to be uncatchable by other engines - so long - until the next breakthrough on the scale of neural networks. Yet, strength is not the only value of chess engines worth considering. Because if it were, we wouldn't have other engines so rich in different capabilities.
