Darius's comment
The latest MCERL, is a big update from the previous edition. Listening to Readers, I have decided that only native chess engines compiled for MAC computers will be played in the MCERL series. As of this issue, there are no chess engines for Windows running on Mac via Wine software on our ranting list.
There are more and more people interested in computer chess, and it is gratifying to see that a large number of them are using different operating systems including, increasingly, Macs (and, interestingly, Linux versions for ARM processors, e.g. Asian and African Readers).
Stockfish 17, is the new leader of MCERL. Having played more than 3,800 games, the numbers clearly indicate, The latest official version of Stockfish is the strongest. It is noteworthy that despite so many development versions released since Stockfish 16.1 (2024-02-24) over the next 6 months, Stockfish 17 released 2024-09-06 is “only” 9 points stronger. This raises interest; after all, there are hundreds of people (probably more) and powerful computers involved in the Stockfish project... and “only” 9 points more for half a year ?! These kinds of statements and questions from Readers have often appeared in my mailbox over the past weeks.
RubiChess 20240817, is probably the last version of this remarkable TOP chess engine. On the one hand, I am glad, because this version is so strong that it ranks just behind Stockfish pushing down MCERL such a beast as Berserk engine. On the other hand, I hope that RubiChess author Mr. Andreas Matthies will return in the future with another version of RubiChess, which will impress as always with the style and power to play chess.
PlentyChess is an engine that broke through to the very top of MCERL taking an excellent place next to such giants as Clover, Alexandria and Caissa. Congratulations to the author!
There are so many changes in the September MCERL that I would probably have to write a few more pages to describe what has happened since the last edition.
At the end of this summary, many thanks to Luca Metehau (author of the Clover engine) and Doruk Sekercioglu (author of the Black Marlin engine) for their fruitful contact in the preparation of the compilation of these chess super-engines for the Mac.
Gentlemen, sincere thanks and respect for your work and making these wonderful masterpieces available to us - the chess community!
Best,
