Darius's comment

It is with great pleasure that I present the final edition of the MCERL for 2024 – a year filled with thrilling moments and captivating games. This issue marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another in the history of MCERL. Exciting changes are on the horizon, designed to make our rankings even more valuable and transparent. Details of these updates will be shared in a separate post on the Chessengeria blog.

In response to suggestions from the Chessengeria community, this edition excludes both engine clones and developer versions. Every engine included is the result of its creators’ dedication and passion for producing the strongest possible designs. A special thanks goes to the author of PlentyChess, whose engine achieved an exceptionally high position on our rating list thanks to optimization tailored for the Apple Silicon CPU.

I am also proud to announce that this edition of MCERL is the first to be conducted on a new platform: the Mac Mini with the Apple Silicon M4 PRO CPU. This upgrade enabled the full potential of the latest engines, further enhancing the quality and reliability of the results.

We also highlight the remarkable performance of Lc0 0.31.2 (BT4-1740), which, powered by the new Apple Silicon M4 PRO CPU and its unique neural network capabilities, delivered a spectacular performance. Rising to a top-ranking position in MCERL, its strength was also confirmed in the prestigious Chess Engines Elite Tournament 2024.

Let this introduction express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone supporting the development of computer chess and sharing our passion. We are confident that this new chapter of MCERL will bring even more inspiration and benefits to the entire community.

We warmly invite you to explore this special edition and follow the upcoming milestones in the growth of Chessengeria!

Best,

Darius, chessengeria.eu owner.

PS.

Time Control Adjustment for Lc0

Due to the nature of Lc0, I allocated it twice as much thinking time compared to other engines. While all other engines were set to a time control of 1 minute per game + 0.6 seconds per move, Lc0 was given 2 minutes per game + 1.2 seconds per move.

This adjustment reflects Lc0's reliance on GPU performance and its neural network architecture, which requires more time to reach optimal decisions. By doubling its time allocation, I aimed to provide a fairer comparison between Lc0 and the "traditional" chess engines in the test environment.
